Start with the material to be shredded

“Mulcher” covers several designs. Equipment for crop residues, grass maintenance and woody vegetation can have different rotors, tools and drives. Do not apply one model’s stated shredding diameter to another machine simply because it looks similar.

Intended use: request approved materials and applications for the exact version. Working above the surface and tilling into the ground are not the same task. Rotor and tools: establish whether blades, flails or fixed teeth are fitted. Check identifiers, mountings and availability; do not assume other tools can be fitted without manufacturer confirmation.

Drive and carrier: compare PTO or hydraulic requirements as appropriate, along with mounting and weight. Working width alone does not establish compatibility with a tractor or another carrier. Support: check skids, support roller and side shift where fitted. Confirm which equipment the price includes.

Inspecting a used mulcher

Request pictures of the entire rotor, tool holders and inside the housing. Inspect guards, bearings, transmission, belts or hydraulic equipment as appropriate to the version. Ask about vibration, obstacle impacts and rotor repairs; a new set of blades alone does not establish machine condition.

For grass maintenance, also compare flail mowers. For specialized equipment for forestry residues, see forestry mulchers. The names overlap to some extent, so choose by the documented application of the particular machine.
