How do you choose an orchard mower?

An orchard mower works in alleyways over grass, weeds and, where the design allows, pruning residue. It does not mow trees or limbs. Confirm any woody-material limit for the exact model.

What should you compare?

Row spacing: check working and overall width, clearance at trunks and the tractor position below the canopy. Offset and housing: assess side-shift range, front or rear mounting, low-profile housing and clearance below branches.

Material: distinguish mowing a sward from shredding prunings; verify permissible residue diameter in the documentation. Rotor: compare knives or hammers, holders, counter-knives, roller or support wheels and height adjustment.

Tractor: verify power, PTO, linkage, lift capacity, hydraulics for side shift, machine weight and balance. Equipment: check PTO shaft, guards, skids and any under-tree or windrow equipment stated in the offer.

Checking a used orchard mower

  • Inspect the rotor, tool completeness and wear, counter-knives, rear roller, bearings, belts, gearbox, side-shift cylinder and hoses.
  • Look for cracks in the low housing and impact marks. Confirm that side shift is smooth, the rotor runs true and guards do not contact moving parts.
  • Request the rating plate and manual. Similar housings may use different tools and have different material limits.
