How do you compare flail mowers?
A flail mower processes vegetation with a rotor carrying flails, hammer knives or blades. Models are not interchangeable: grass, crop residue, scrub and small woody growth place different demands on the tools and housing.
Specifications worth checking
Material and finish: confirm the intended material and the tool limits in the manual for the exact version. Working and overall width: match the working width to the passes and the overall and transport widths to gates and roads.
Tractor compatibility: check power range, PTO speed, linkage category, rotation direction, lift capacity and machine weight. Rotor and tools: compare type, number and arrangement of tools, rotor diameter, counter-knives and balancing options.
Ground following: assess the rear roller, skids, cutting-height adjustment, side shift and any front or reverse-drive mounting. Driveline: identify the gearbox, belts, freewheel or PTO protection and access to lubrication points.
What should you inspect on a used mower?
Check the housing, welds and linkage points, tool completeness and even wear, holders, counter-knives, rear roller and skids.
Check bearing play, belts and pulleys, gearbox leaks and rotor runout. Vibration can indicate a missing tool, worn bearing or imbalance.
Request the rating plate and version specification. Tool count alone does not determine work rate or shredding quality.
