How should a timber transport system be specified?
This category combines equipment used in different conditions. A forwarder and forestry trailer work on the site or forest roads; a truck and semi-trailer form a road-going combination; cranes handle loading. The correct choice starts with the full timber route, not one headline specification.
Forestry trailers and tractor/trailer forestry cranes: a combination dependent on the tractor. Check masses, drawbar, brakes, trailer drive, hydraulic supply and stability with the crane working.
Timber trucks and timber semi-trailers: road solutions. Verify permitted masses from documents, axles, suspension, stakes, lashing systems and weight distribution with body and crane.
Truck-mounted timber cranes: compare lifting moment and load chart, reach, boom geometry, stabilisers, mounting position, controls, grapple and stowed dimensions.
How should a used listing be checked?
Start an inspection by matching chassis, body and crane identification to the documents. Look for cracks at stake sockets, crane base, drawbar and axles; inspect pins, stabilisers, hoses, cylinders, brakes and tyres. Test the crane with warm oil and a suitable load at several positions, within its manual and load chart. For a road vehicle, establish the actual payload after the body and crane have been included.
Information to request from the seller
State timber type and lengths, off-road and road legs, access conditions, trip frequency and loading method at both ends. Request kerb and permitted masses from the documents, load-space dimensions, number and adjustment of stakes, the crane specification and load chart, inspection and repair history, and an itemised scope of sale.
