Choosing a tractor for your farm
Start with the implements the tractor must power or pull and the space available for work. Field operations, trailer work and loading in a tight yard may call for different configurations. Engine horsepower alone does not make two listings comparable.
Power and transmission: distinguish rated engine power, maximum power and PTO power. Ask for the transmission version, shuttle type and equipment fitted to this particular tractor. PTO and hydraulics: match PTO speeds and shaft type, hydraulic flow and the number and type of couplers to implement requirements.
Hitch equipment: compare three-point hitch category, lift capacity at the stated measuring point and drawbar or coupling type. Hitch lift capacity is not a trailer weight rating. Size and running gear: check width, height, tyres, drive configuration and weight. Establish whether ballast and optional equipment are included.
Questions before viewing a used tractor
Request the serial number, year, operating hours, service records and known faults. With a competent inspector, assess drivetrain, hydraulic and PTO operation, leaks, tyre wear and wear at connections. Read the hour meter alongside the records, not as proof of condition on its own.
