How to choose an agricultural loader
Start with the heaviest load, required lift height and forward distance. A headline capacity without the boom position, reach and attachment weight does not describe the usable capacity.
Specifications to compare
Machine type: telescopic handler, wheel loader, articulated loader or telescopic wheel loader; geometry, visibility and manoeuvrability differ. Capacity and geometry: load chart, lift height, forward reach, attachment weight and stabilisers where fitted.
Attachment: carriage standard, locking system, auxiliary hydraulic flow and compatibility with the bucket, grab, fork or tool. Work area: width and height, turning circle, ground clearance, tyres, surface conditions and doorway height.
Driveline and hydraulics: transmission, axle drive, steering modes, hydraulic output and auxiliary circuits. Travel: machine mass, speed, brakes, lighting and documents required for the intended use.
Inspecting a used loader
- Check play in the boom, pins, carriage and articulation joint, plus telescopic chains, stabilisers, axles, tyres and brakes.
- Inspect cylinders, hoses and valves for leaks. Under a permitted load, check smooth movement, load holding, steering and safety systems as described in the manual.
- For transport without load handling, compare agricultural trailers instead.
