A tractor implement or a garden tiller?
First decide whether you need equipment powered by a tractor or a complete machine with its own motor. A rotary tiller breaks up and mixes soil with blades on a transverse rotor. It differs from a harrow with vertical-axis rotors and from a mulcher designed to shred vegetation.
Working range: compare width, depth adjustment and control by skids, wheels or a roller. Maximum specifications do not describe results in every soil. Drive: on a tractor implement, check PTO requirements, mounting and weight. On a self-powered machine, establish motor type, transmission and wheel or transport equipment.
Rotor and blades: ask about blade type, rotation direction and availability of the correct replacement set. PTO and rotor speeds are separate figures. Included equipment: confirm the driveline shaft, guards, skids and accessories shown in photographs. They may not all be included in the price.
Inspecting a used rotary tiller
Examine blades and their mounts, rotor, housing, bearings and gearbox seals. Ask about unusual vibration and previous repairs. On a self-powered machine, also ask the seller to demonstrate starting and controls under the conditions specified in the manual.
Descriptions such as “stone burier” or “reverse rotation” refer to particular designs, not every rotary tiller. Request model documentation. To compare another form of powered seedbed preparation, see agricultural harrows.
