How should a logging winch be matched to tractor and extraction?
Rated pull is not the only criterion. Selection depends on tractor mass, slope, extraction length, stems per pull and work organisation. Single- or double-drum, mechanical or electro-hydraulic winches control rope differently and have different service requirements.
What should actually be compared?
Pull and braking: match maximum pull to the permitted tractor, brake capacity and butt plate. Establish whether the maker specifies a constant pull or one that changes as the drum fills.
Rope and drum: compare rope construction, diameter and length, drum capacity, upper/lower pulleys, fairlead and winding. Extra length must remain within permitted rope diameter and capacity.
Drive and control: inspect PTO, gearing, clutch, brake, mechanical, electro-hydraulic or radio controls, hydraulic payout and stop functions.
Tractor and mounting: verify linkage category, recommended tractor power and mass, PTO shaft, butt-plate width, protective screen, chokers and transport position.
How should a used listing be checked?
Pull out the rope and inspect broken wires, crushing, corrosion, end fitting and anchorage. Check drum, pulleys, bearings, driveline, clutch, brake and frame without entering mechanism pinch zones. A controlled-load test should cover pull, stop, holding and controlled payout, plus remote operation where fitted. Verify guards and stop functions according to the manual.
Information to request from the seller
Request full model, serial and year, pulling and braking force, rope diameter/length/age, drum count, speed, controls, linkage category and recommended tractor power. Establish clutch, brake, gearbox and payout repairs, and confirm remote, PTO shaft, pulleys, chokers, butt plate and manual are included.
