Match a petrol chainsaw to the workload
State whether the saw is for limbing, firewood, general property work or regular felling. Wood diameter and hardness and the frequency of use determine the required class. Compare output together with weight and only with guide bars approved for the exact model.
Details a useful listing should contain
Exact model and engine: displacement, documented output, weight without fuel and cutting equipment, and the approved guide-bar range.
Cutting system: bar length and mount, chain pitch, drive-link gauge and count, plus the condition of the drive sprocket.
Controls and handling: handle layout, anti-vibration elements, tensioner, chain brake and catcher, and adjustable oil delivery where fitted.
History: serial number, purchase year, servicing, repairs to the cylinder, piston, carburettor or starter, and replacement of the bar, chain or sprocket.
Inspecting a used petrol chainsaw
Ask the seller not to warm the saw before inspection. Check cold starting, a warm restart, stable idling and throttle response in accordance with the manual. Inspect for fuel and oil leaks and look at the air filter, starter, muffler, anti-vibration mounts, handles and housing.
Assess the bar rails and nose sprocket, chain, drive sprocket, tensioner and oil delivery separately. The brake, trigger lockout, chain catcher and guards must be present and operational. A missing hour reading is not itself suspicious because most handheld saws do not record hours; documented maintenance and a controlled demonstration are more useful.
