Select WMS by processes, inventory model, integrations, devices and support. A licence without configuration, data and environment rights is not a working system.

How should Warehouse management systems (WMS) listings be compared?
WMS manages locations, tasks and stock but does not replace WCS/PLC automation or ERP. Scope comes from receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, packing, dispatch, inventory and exceptions, not from the number of screens in a presentation.
What actually changes the choice?
Processes: inbound, put-away, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, returns and inventory; data model: SKU, lots, serials, dates, units, HUs, locations and owners; integrations: ERP, TMS, e-commerce, carriers, automation, printers and scanners; implementation: configuration, migration, testing, training, cut-over and support; cost: users, modules, environments, devices, APIs, upgrades and SLA
Comparison becomes meaningful only after the load unit, flow profile and interfaces are defined. The rated throughput of one module is not the throughput of the complete installation.
How should a used item be checked?
When taking over an existing WMS, request a test environment and run scenarios from receipt to dispatch including corrections, unreadable codes, quantity differences and integration failure. Inspect queues, logs, scheduled jobs, peak performance, backups and recovery. Verify ownership of code, configuration, database, admin accounts and licences; without transfer rights a “used WMS” may not be transferable.
What information should the seller provide?
Provide process maps, warehouses, users, SKU, order and line volumes and peaks, plus the system list. Request a function and exception matrix, architecture, APIs, licence model, infrastructure, data migration, test plan, reference response times, support, versions, roadmap and multi-year total cost.
