How do you choose a verge mower?

This category primarily covers offset or tilting flail mowers, not hand-held, battery or lawn mowers. Match the machine geometry to the bank and ditch profile.

Specifications to compare

Width and offset: check working width, maximum reach beyond the tractor wheel and any uncut strip. Tilt range: compare work down into a ditch and up a bank; verify limits when fully offset.

Rotor and material: identify tools, permissible vegetation, rotor diameter, counter-knives, rear roller and skids. Tractor: confirm power, PTO, linkage, lift capacity, hydraulic connections, minimum mass or track and recommended ballast.

Transport: assess folded width and height, locks, centre of gravity and required road lighting. Protection: check break-back protection, guards, chains or curtains and the correct PTO shaft.

Inspecting a used machine

  • Check the frame, pivots, pins and bushes, cylinders, hoses, linkage points and signs of impact. Confirm that transport locks are complete.
  • Inspect rotor tools and holders, bearings, roller, skids, belts and gearbox. Test offset and tilt without jerking and the rotor without excessive vibration.
  • Do not select the machine by engine power alone. Tractor stability, lift capacity and centre of gravity matter just as much.
