Will it handle your planting material?

A potato planter is not automatically suitable for transplants. For tubers and bulbs, confirm the permitted size range and feeding mechanism. For transplants, tell the seller the root-ball dimensions, tray format or whether the plants are bare-root. Naming the crop in a listing does not establish compatibility with every form of planting material.

Compare these details

Row layout: number of units, row-spacing range, in-row spacing and any parts required to change them. Feeding: cups, belts or grippers depending on the design; material grading requirements and how the machine is replenished.

Labour: who feeds the plants, how many operators are needed and which tasks are actually automated on this version. Tractor compatibility: mounting, loaded weight, lift capacity, drive and hydraulic requirements stated in the manual.

Inspecting a used machine

Examine the relevant pick-up components, chains, gearboxes, openers and press wheels. Check that all row units are complete and that spacing conversion parts are available. Confirm whether tanks, fertiliser or water delivery and ridge-forming equipment are included. If a demonstration is possible, use representative planting material and follow the machine's instructions.

When should you look under seeders?

In English, “planter” can also mean a precision seed planter. For cereal drilling or singulating individual seeds, compare seeders. Use the machine's function and actual metering system to choose the category, rather than the seller's terminology alone.
