How do you choose a suspended access platform?

The deck hangs on ropes from a suspension rig attached to a building or structure. A bare platform without hoists, ropes and rigging is therefore not a complete system.

Components that must be compatible

  • Deck: module length and layout, width, rated capacity, guardrails, end sections and permitted load distribution.
  • Hoists: type, quantity, capacity, speed, power supply and compatibility with rope construction and diameter.
  • Ropes and protection: working and safety ropes, secondary devices, limit switches, cables and façade guides.
  • Suspension: beams, outreach, counterweights or anchors, connectors and a design for the specific roof or structure.
  • Documentation: manual, parts list, assembly diagram, serial numbers and records of service and required inspections.

Inspecting a used system

  • Check deck completeness, module joints, welds, guardrails, hoists, brakes, safety devices, cables and controls.
  • Assess ropes against the manufacturer criteria; appearance or stated age alone is not enough to confirm suitability.
  • The suspension, counterweights, anchors and structural capacity must be verified for the installation site before use.

Avoid category confusion

  • A suspended platform is neither a self-propelled lift nor a mast climbing work platform. The listing should say whether it covers a complete system, deck module, hoist or accessory.
