Compact and municipal tractors: how should listings be compared?
A compact tractor earns its value as a carrier for defined implements. Engine power alone does not prove that it can operate a mower, loader, plough, brush or spreader. PTO power, hydraulics, lift capacity, mass and stability must be considered as one configuration.
Match the equipment to the job first
Rank the intended jobs and identify the most demanding implement. Turf work needs low ground impact and suitable tyres, transport needs stability and braking, and winter service needs traction, cab heating and hydraulics that operate in low temperatures.
What really affects the choice?
Compare engine and PTO power, available PTO speeds, number and flow of hydraulic circuits, three-point categories, lift capacity and drawbar limits. Dimensions, turning circle, clearance, mass and permitted axle loads must suit the routes and implements.
Check axle drive, differential locks, transmission, creeper speeds, cab, visibility and implement controls. With a loader or heavy implement, obtain an approved ballast and tyre configuration rather than relying on a general assurance.
How should a used item be checked?
Start the engine cold and check smoke, leaks and transmission response. Under load, test the PTO, each hydraulic circuit, linkage and steering. Inspect axle and linkage play, tyres, brakes, hitches, shafts, electrics and cracks around mounting points.
What information should the seller provide?
Ask for model, PIN or serial number, year, hours, engine and PTO power, hydraulic data, lift ratings, masses, tyres, road approval and implement list. For every implement, identify mounting, drive, hoses, controls, ballast and PTO shaft included in the price.
