Two systems in one purchase
A self-propelled sprayer combines its own engine, running gear and cab with a complete liquid and application system. Good chassis condition does not prove that the spraying equipment works, and the reverse is also true. Budget for both systems, service access and model-specific parts.
Fit to the operation
Chassis: clearance, track-width range, tyres, weight, turning radius, stability and transport dimensions for the advertised configuration. Powertrain: hours and service history for the engine, transmission or hydrostatic drive, axles, suspension, brakes and steering.
Spraying system: tank, pump, agitation, filters, boom, boom guidance, sections, nozzle bodies and rinsing system. Controls: terminals, sensors, flow meter, receivers, cameras, harnesses and licences. Ask for a list of functions activated on this machine.
What should a viewing include?
Compare the hour reading with service records and the condition of the controls. Inspect the undercarriage, welds, leaks, joints, tyres and rims. Then perform a separate check of the spraying system: tank, pump, lines, filters, valves and boom. Unfolding the boom and a clean-water test following the manual should show pressure stability, section response, boom guidance and rinsing. Check fault messages and control operation, not just whether the engine starts.
Compare it with a tractor combination
Independent propulsion may simplify work planning, but it means maintaining another vehicle. Compare the total purchase, servicing, tyre and electronic costs with a tractor and trailed sprayer. Do not assume that every self-propelled machine has greater output, higher clearance or more equipment.
