How should a harvester head be matched to carrier and timber?
A harvester head is a cutting, feeding, delimbing and measuring system. It must suit the stems and the carrier’s boom, pump, hoses and computer. Excess head mass reduces stability and capacity at reach; an undersized head may lose control of heavy timber.
What should actually be compared?
Timber range: compare maximum cut, roller and knife opening, delimbing range and recommended operating envelope. A maximum figure does not mean efficient continuous work at that size.
Feed and cut: check roller count/type, feed motors, force/speed, moving and fixed knives, saw unit, tensioning, lubrication and options such as top saw or stump treatment.
Carrier: include head, rotator and link mass in the boom chart. Verify flow, pressure, return, filtration, cooling, hoses, wiring and control protocol.
Measurement: assess measuring wheel, encoders, diameter sensors, calibration and computer integration. Without a compatible controller, a mechanically complete head may not provide all functions.
How should a used listing be checked?
Identify the exact version and serial. Inspect frame, welds, pins, bushes, rotator and link, rollers and bearings, knives and mounts, saw, bar, tensioner, lubrication tank, measuring wheel, sensors, motors and valve block. On a compatible carrier with warm oil, process several stem sizes; physically measure assortment length and diameter and compare them with the computer. Follow energy-isolation procedures during inspection.
Information to request from the seller
Request model, serial, year, mass with rotator/link, stem range, required carrier, flow and pressure, hydraulic/electrical diagrams and compatible control systems. Establish hours, feed-motor/roller, valve and rotator rebuilds, frame repairs, saw and measuring history, last calibration, software, hoses, computer and included spares.
