A trailed forage harvester performs the same basic process as a self-propelled machine, but its capacity and operation depend on the tractor and the trailer arrangement. Define whether the machine will pick up grass swaths or harvest maize, the required chop length and where the crop must be discharged.
What actually determines the choice
Identify the pickup or maize header, intake width and drive. Then verify tractor power range, PTO speed and shaft, hitch, hydraulics, electrical connection and controller. A power figure without crop and configuration context does not prove that the tractor can maintain an even crop flow.
Compare feed rollers, foreign-object protection, cutterhead or flywheel design, knife number and condition, shearbar and length-of-cut adjustment. Chute rotation and flap control must suit the trailer and unloading side. Also assess transport position, road width and visibility of the complete combination.
How to inspect a used machine
With the machine disconnected and secured, inspect the pickup or header, feed mechanism, knives, shearbar, housing, blower paddles, bearings and gearboxes. Play, cracks, worn crop-path surfaces or repairs to rotating components require particular caution. Check the guarded PTO shaft, hoses, cylinders, drawbar, wheels and controller operation.
What to ask the seller
Request the exact model, year, serial number, manual, required power and PTO, machine weight, attachments and full equipment list. Ask when knives and shearbar were last changed, what driveline repairs were made, which crops it handled and whether it can be demonstrated. Confirm that PTO shaft, hoses, controller and chute components are included.
