How should a truck-mounted timber crane be selected?

Rated tonne-metres do not show what the crane will lift from the far side of the vehicle. The decision needs a load chart for the exact boom version, reach to the furthest part of the load space, and the vehicle mass after adding subframe, stabilisers, grapple and rotator.

What should actually be compared?

  • Boom and stowing: S- and Z-booms fold differently. Confirm whether the crane stows with the grapple, where it sits over the cab or load, and its effect on load space, height and axle distribution.
  • Capacity at work: compare lifting moment, capacity at several radii, hydraulic outreach, slew and blind zones. Versions under one model family may use different extensions and have different mass.
  • Installation: crane base, subframe, stabiliser spread, rear- or cab-mounted position and hydraulic supply must form a documented combination with the chassis.
  • Operation: assess ground, high-seat, cabin or remote controls, sight line to the load, hose routing, rotator, grapple and optional weighing. Operator position affects cycle time and control.

How should a used listing be checked?

Inspect the crane with critical areas clean. Check pedestal, column, booms and welds, slew-bearing and pin play, extensions, stabilisers, cylinders and hoses. With warm oil, operate smoothly with a suitable load at short and longer reach within the chart. Watch for cylinder drift, vibration, uneven movement and excessive oil temperature.

Information to request from the seller

Request the complete model and boom code, year and serial, crane declaration/logbook, load chart, mass with base and tools, mounting arrangement and installation documents. Establish pump type, pressure and flow, controls, rotator and grapple models, operating history, inspections, structural repairs and the itemised scope of sale.
