Match the machine to the material and duty cycle
A material handler is configured for repeated lifting, sorting and loading cycles. Before comparing listings, define the material, loading height, required working radius and manoeuvring space. Machines in this class are used for applications such as scrap, waste, timber, bulk materials and port handling, but each listing must be assessed against its actual configuration.
Do not compare machines by maximum reach alone. Check the load chart for the required radius and height, support arrangement and working direction. The weight of the grab, magnet, quick coupler and other equipment reduces the load that can be lifted safely.
Undercarriage, drive and operator position
A wheeled undercarriage supports movement around a yard, a crawler version is selected for the ground conditions, while stationary or gantry configurations suit a fixed operating area. Also compare stabilisers, clearance, transport dimensions and available space. A diesel drive is independent of a power connection, whereas an electric drive can suit stationary work; available variants depend on the model. An elevating cab improves the view into a container, rail wagon or stockpile, but its mechanism and safeguards also need checking.
Inspecting a used material handler
Ask for the model designation, serial number, matching specification and load chart. Inspect the boom, stick, pins, slew bearing, cylinders and hoses for play, repairs and leaks. Check the stabilisers, undercarriage, brakes or track components, cab elevation system, cameras and the completeness of the grab, magnet or quick coupler. Any functional test should follow the manufacturer's instructions, take place on suitable ground and involve a competent person.
How does a material handler differ from a conventional excavator?
Its structure and configuration are focused on frequent handling cycles, the required reach, visibility and operation with a grab or another attachment. A wheeled or crawler undercarriage alone therefore does not place a machine in this category.
Which drive and undercarriage should you choose?
The choice depends on yard mobility, ground bearing capacity, the number of work positions, available power and how long the machine will remain in one place. Compare the complete configuration, not only the drive or undercarriage type.
Which lifting-capacity figure matters most?
The useful figure is the capacity at the actual working radius and height, for the specified support arrangement and direction. The weight of the fitted attachment must also be allowed for.
