Define the product required from the log
A frame saw is a primary breakdown machine, but a listing may cover only the saw unit or a package with infeed, carriage and log handling. State maximum log diameter and length, species, target sections and required surface quality. If the offer combines several process stages, compare it with sawmills and sawmilling lines.
What should be compared?
Sawing arrangement: machine type and tooling, blade number and spacing, kerf and the availability of sharpening and parts for that exact system.
Material envelope: permitted log diameter, length and weight, throat or clearance, and the minimum and maximum finished section. Do not borrow specifications from a similar model.
Feed and handling: bed or table, feed drive, hold-downs, turning, centring and outfeed. The cutting unit's nominal capacity is not the throughput of the complete station.
Power and installation: motor rating and supply, controls, sawdust extraction, foundation, working footprint and access for blade changes.
Scope of sale: an itemised list of tables, carriages, rollers, hydraulics, control cabinets, cables, manuals, saws and spare parts.
Assessing a used frame saw
A test cut through a straight log of known dimensions provides the best evidence. Measure thickness repeatability and inspect the sawn surface. Variation may arise from tooling, guides, alignment or mechanical play, so photographs alone cannot identify the cause.
Inspect the main frame, bed and anchor points, guides or wheels, shafts and bearings, hold-downs, feed drive, lubrication, electrics and hydraulics. Request manuals, wiring and hydraulic diagrams, repair records and the information needed to dismantle, transport, align and recommission the machine.
