Define the process stage, bed width, row layout, haulm preparation and the required level of gentle handling before buying.
What actually determines the choice
Compare lifting or pickup method, depth control, pickup rollers and channel width. A windrower must form an even swath, while a harvester must pick it up cleanly without excessive soil. Examine the main webs, agitators, rollers and systems used to separate soil, clods and stones.
Establish whether crop is left on the field, moved to a bunker, passed over an inspection table or delivered directly to a trailer. Drop heights and repeated transfers may affect damage. Match hitch, PTO, hydraulics, tyres and transport dimensions to the tractor, fields and farm logistics.
How to inspect a used machine
Inspect shares, rollers, webs and joiners, bars, support rollers, tensioners, bearings and drives. Look for unequal web lengths, bent bars, abrasion and frame repairs. Follow every direction change and drop in the crop path. With the machine secured, test hydraulics, controls and adjustment functions; any crop test must follow the manual.
What to ask the seller
Request exact model, year, serial number, bed width, web type and pitch, tractor requirements and the intended onion discharge. Confirm haulm removal, soil, clod or stone separation, inspection table and bunker equipment. Ask which webs, tensioners and bearings have been replaced and whether a demonstration with crop is available.
