How should a forestry mulcher be matched to carrier and material?
A maximum material diameter applies to a specific model, tool and condition. Undergrowth and logging residue differ from stumps, roots or below-ground work. First choose carrier and outcome: surface reduction, site preparation or incorporation into soil.
What should actually be compared?
Carrier and drive: separate PTO mulchers from hydraulic heads. For PTO, check power, speed, rotation, shaft and gearbox; for hydraulics, flow, pressure, return, cooling and mounting plate.
Rotor and tools: compare fixed-tooth and flail rotors, tool type, count and arrangement, counter-blades, rotor speed and wear-part availability. Stones and ground contact change the correct tool.
Working geometry: working and overall width, rotor diameter, skids, hood, push frame, depth and driveline articulation affect coverage and protection.
Power balance: match mass and demand to carrier stability and creeper speed. Excessive travel speed or the wrong rotor reduces finish and increases loads.
How should a used listing be checked?
Before inspection, stop, isolate and secure the machine according to its instructions. Inspect the rotor for missing or uneven tools, cracks, runout and imbalance evidence; check bearings, belts, gearboxes, PTO shaft or hydraulic motor, clutches, housing, skids, chain guards and hood. During a safe test, listen for vibration and monitor bearing and driveline temperature. Ask for interior photos taken before fresh paint.
