How should a forestry crane be matched to tractor or trailer?
A crane on the trailer, drawbar, three-point linkage or tractor loads the combination differently. Do not choose on maximum reach alone. You need its load chart, mass with rotator and grapple, base compatibility and hydraulic delivery at the tractor’s working speed.
What should actually be compared?
Capacity and geometry: compare net/gross moment, capacity at 3–4 m and maximum reach, extensions, slew angle and torque. Figures without grapple and rotator must be adjusted for their mass.
Mounting and stabilisers: determine whether the pedestal is intended for trailer frame, drawbar or linkage. Check stabiliser type and spread, frame reinforcement, imposed loads and clearance for slewing.
Hydraulics and controls: verify pressure and flow, open-centre or LS circuit, return, filtration, cooling and any PTO pump. Compare valve bank, joysticks and hose routing.
Transport: when stowed, the crane must clear load, cab and hitch. Calculate total width, height and mass, and confirm how boom and grapple are secured.
How should a used listing be checked?
Inspect plate, pedestal and stabilisers, column, booms, extension, welds, pins, slew bearing, hoses and cylinders. With warm oil, test combined movements and lift a suitable load at several radii within the chart. Assess smoothness, play, drift, rotator and grapple, and stability with an empty trailer. Do not test on an undocumented improvised mounting.
