How do you match a forwarder to the site and extraction distance?
A forwarder carries assortments in a staked bunk, so selection combines loading performance, load size and mobility. A smaller, agile machine may suit thinning; a higher-capacity model can reduce trips over a long extraction route—provided the ground supports its loaded mass.
What should actually be compared?
Payload and bunk: compare rated load with cross-sectional area, length and adjustment of bunks and headboard. Confirm that the geometry fits the required assortments rather than relying on an unexplained volume figure.
Crane: examine reach, lifting moment and capacity at the working radius, plus slew, grapple, rotator and control system. More reach changes loading access, but boom mass and load also affect stability.
Terrain and traction: wheel count, width, ground clearance, tractive force, tyre size and provisions for tracks or chains determine performance on soft ground and slopes. Include transport dimensions in the comparison.
Real cycle performance: assess crane speed, cab ergonomics and visibility, weighing and production-data systems where fitted. Engine power alone does not describe loading and travel time.
How should a used listing be checked?
Begin with a cold start and read available controller hours. With warm oil, test pump and boom under load, telescope, slew, rotator and grapple. Inspect centre-joint and bogie play, transmissions, axles, brakes, tyres and bunk mounts. Examine the underside, crane pedestal and frame for cracks, weld repairs and impact. The drive test should cover both ranges, steering and braking.

Request the serial number, exact 6/8-wheel build, mass, payload and bunk dimensions, crane model and reach, grapple and rotator models, tyres and included tracks. Also obtain engine and crane hours, oil and filter records, a fault report, repairs to articulation, pumps and crane, and transport dimensions.
