Cable or grapple skidder — how should listings be compared?
A skidder moves timber by partial or full dragging, so traction, load control and lift geometry matter. A cable machine reaches stems away from the trail but adds manual line work; a grapple machine picks up prepared bunches quickly where there is room to manoeuvre.
What should actually be compared?
Extraction method: state timber length and mass, stem distribution, trail width and distance. Cable machines need winch, rope and fairlead data; grapple machines need jaw area/opening and arch geometry.
Traction: compare tractive force, driveline and locks, tyre size and condition, chains, clearance, mass distribution and slope capability for the intended site.
Structure: inspect centre joint, arch, blade, frame, axles and underbody protection. The load-lift system can reduce ground contact, but its pins and cylinders must be sound.
Operator station: assess rear visibility, cab guarding, winch/grapple controls, rotating seat, cameras and access to filters and cooling pack.
How should a used listing be checked?
After a cold start, test transmission, both directions, locks, axles, brakes and steering. Inspect articulation, arch and grapple play, frame welds, blade, guards and rims. On a cable skidder, pull out the rope, examine broken wires and drum, then test clutch, brake and fairlead with controlled resistance. On a grapple unit, test jaw symmetry, arch/rotation and cylinders. Test hydraulics warm.

Request serial, exact cable/grapple version, year, hours, mass, tyres and included chains. For cable: winch model and pull, rope diameter/length/age and controls. For grapple: model, opening and area, and arch type. Obtain history for articulation, transmission, axles, pumps and frame repairs.
