How do you choose a reach-arm mower?
A reach-arm mower is more than a cutting head. The arm geometry, hydraulic system, mounting and controls determine whether the system fits the job. A reach figure without its working position and head can be misleading.
Key listing details
Reach and geometry: check horizontal and vertical reach, work behind the tractor and around obstacles, and two-sided operation only when specified. Cutting head: identify width, rotor, tools, required oil flow and material range; arm length alone says nothing about the finish.
Hydraulics: compare a self-contained pump and tank with tractor-fed systems; verify flow, pressure, cooling and filtration. Tractor and mounting: confirm minimum mass or power, lift capacity, ballast, mounting frame, linkage and hydraulic connections.
Controls: check joystick or cable control, proportional functions, float, break-back protection and valve/controller compatibility. Transport: assess parking position, stands, folded height and width, and transport locks.
Inspecting a used system
Look for cracks and repairs on the arm and frame, worn pins and bushes, and leaks at cylinders, valve block, pump, head motor and hoses.
Inspect the head rotor, tools, bearings, roller and housing. During a controlled test, move through the working range without striking the stops.
Confirm that the PTO shaft, tank, cooler, controller, wiring, stands and tractor-specific mounting parts are included.
