How should Trailers listings be compared?

Trailers carry their own mass on axles and are connected by a coupling or drawbar. A semi-trailer transfers part of its mass to the tractor’s fifth wheel, so deck dimensions alone do not make the two designs comparable.

Choose the correct subcategory

What actually changes the choice?

Check load mass and dimensions, loading method and trip frequency. Compare trailer gross weight, unladen mass, payload, vertical coupling load, coupling type, axle count, tyres and brakes. The towing vehicle needs the matching ratings and connections.

Body type should follow the cargo. Dropsides suit open loads, a box protects goods, a tipper discharges bulk material, and vehicle or livestock transport requires specialist geometry and equipment. Payload remains more important than volume alone.

How should a used vehicle be checked?

Verify identification number, plate and records, then inspect drawbar, coupling, frame, axles, springs or air bags, brakes, lines, electrics and tyres. Check bearing play, corrosion, uneven wear and operation of parking and overrun brakes where fitted.

What information should the seller provide?

Request gross weight, unladen mass, payload, permitted coupling load, coupling type and required connections. Obtain usable dimensions, axle and brake specification, service history, frame repairs and confirmation that the towing vehicle’s ratings cover the combination.
