What actually changes the choice?
Soil, aggregate, scrap and light bulk materials need different body volumes, floor thicknesses and materials. Compare steel or aluminium, rear or side tipping, side height, body profile and tailgate. Calculate usable volume from the density of the normal load.
Axle layout, wheelbase, driven axles and tyres must suit the surface and gradients. Tipping requires level ground, adequate overhead clearance, correct hinge geometry and cylinder stroke. Body, subframe and guard weight all reduce the mass of material that can be carried.
How should a used vehicle be checked?
Start with the floor, sides, tailgate, hinges and subframe. Look for distortion, cracks, abrasion, cylinder leaks and evidence of rollover repairs. On a level site perform a controlled no-load tipping cycle, checking PTO, pump, locks and smooth movement.
