How should a forestry trailer be matched to tractor and crane?
A forestry trailer is not a standalone machine. Payload and traction must suit the tractor’s mass, hitch, braking and hydraulics. A crane changes drawbar load and stability, while roller or hub drive assists off-road only when serviceable and correctly supplied.
What should actually be compared?
Load: compare rated payload, bunk cross-section and length, number of bunks, headboard and provisions for axle movement or frame extension. Match them to the assortments.
Mobility: axle count, ground clearance, tyres, steering drawbar angle and 2/4WD affect rutting, obstacle clearance and manoeuvring. Confirm the allowed speed with drive engaged for the exact version.
Tractor connection: verify hitch, vertical load, brakes, lighting, steering drawbar, hydraulic circuits, flow and pressure. A PTO pump may or may not be included.
Crane: pedestal and stabilisers must suit the frame. Compare mass, outreach, capacity at maximum reach, slew torque, grapple and rotator, and stability with an empty trailer.
How should a used listing be checked?
Inspect frame, welds, drawbar, hitch, crane mounting zones, bunks and axles. Check articulation and bearing play, rims, tyres, brakes, hoses and lights. Test trailer drive under a suitable load within manufacturer limits; assess motors, rollers/hubs and controls. Test the crane with warm oil and check stabilisers for drift and play.
Information to request from the seller
Request trailer model and serial, year, mass, payload, bunk area and length, tyres, drive and brake type, hitch and drawbar load. Establish crane, pedestal, stabiliser, grapple and rotator models, required flow/pressure, whether a separate pump is included, documents and the precise equipment list.
