Log splitters

Start with the wood, not splitting force alone

State log length, typical and maximum section, species, moisture and whether the timber has already been cross-cut into rounds. Rated splitting force is a model specification, but clearance, stroke, wedge geometry, support and the complete cycle also determine suitability.

Vertical, horizontal and which drive?

• Working orientation: a vertical splitter can reduce lifting for some heavy rounds; a horizontal machine may use a log lifter and outfeed table. Confirm the actual working height or log length.
• Drive: an electric motor needs the specified voltage and protection; PTO drive needs a suitable tractor, shaft speed and guarded driveline; an engine needs service evidence. A carrier-hydraulic version requires compatible flow and pressure.
• Cycle: compare working stroke, approach and splitting speeds, return and adjustable short stroke. A two-stage pump or automatic return applies only to specific versions.
• Finished product: single or multi-way wedge, wedge adjustment, table, log lifter and conveyor change both output handling and the value of the package.

Inspecting a used log splitter

Check the cylinder rod for scoring or bending, the cylinder and connections for leakage, and the hoses, pump, valve and tank. Inspect slide guides, wedge wear, frame, welds, supports and mountings. Two-hand controls, guards and stop devices should be complete and operate as described in the manual for that model.

A demonstration on representative wood should show a full cycle without jerking, pressure loss or uncontrolled movement. Establish whether the sale includes the PTO shaft, power lead, lifter, table, wedges, conveyor and manuals, because these items can materially change commissioning cost.
