Petrol, corded electric or cordless?

Start with the work: limbing, preparing firewood, cutting construction timber or felling. Wood diameter and hardness, frequency of use, access to power and the working weight of the complete saw all matter. Rated power or a long guide bar alone does not establish suitability.

Petrol chainsaws suit work away from mains power and tasks where quick refuelling is useful. Compare power-to-weight, the bar range approved for the model, starting behaviour and the condition of the engine and fuel system.
Corded electric chainsaws depend on a suitable electrical supply. Check voltage, cable and plug condition, lead length, working weight and the protective features fitted to the exact version.
Cordless chainsaws provide mobility without fuel but require a compatible battery system. Confirm the battery and charger models, number and capacity of packs, and the weight of the ready-to-use set.

Specifications worth comparing

Cutting system: guide-bar length and mount, chain pitch, drive-link gauge and count, plus compatibility with the drive sprocket.
Exact model capability: approved bar range, chain speed, drive output or engine data, and weight with bar, chain and energy source fitted.
Construction: handle layout, chain brake, chain catcher, trigger lockout, tensioner and the method used to lubricate the cutting attachment.
Scope of supply: bar, chain, scabbard and tools; for cordless equipment, identify every battery and charger rather than accepting “set included”.

Checks for a used chainsaw

Ask for the exact model designation, serial number, purchase year and repair history. Inspect the bar, chain and drive sprocket; verify chain tensioning, oil delivery and the presence and operation of the brake, catcher and guards. Test only in accordance with the model manual. A petrol saw should be demonstrated from cold and restarted warm; a corded saw needs an intact lead; a cordless saw should be tested with the battery offered in the listing.

Do not compare a bare powerhead with a complete package. The listing should make clear which components are available for immediate use and which will have to be purchased separately.
