The feed material determines the machine

State typical and maximum branches, forks, length, moisture and the proportion of leafy brush. A rated diameter belongs to the exact model under defined conditions; it does not replace the infeed-opening dimensions or a trial. Stone, metal, soil and contaminated demolition timber are not representative feed for a brush chipper.

Details a useful listing should contain

Infeed: throat dimensions, number and arrangement of rollers, opening and down pressure, feed-speed control, stop and reverse functions.
Cutting system: drum or disc, knife quantity and dimensions, mounting, anvil, adjustment access and availability of the correct parts.
Drive: dedicated engine, PTO or another system. For PTO, verify power, shaft speed and driveline; for an engine, verify fuel, service records and controller hours where recorded.
Chip and discharge: chip-length adjustment, screen where fitted, chute height and rotation, and the ability to fill the intended container or trailer.
Mobility: overall weight and dimensions, running gear, hitch and documents for a towable unit, or carrier mounting and hydraulics for an attachment.

Trial and inspection of a used chipper

Ask for a demonstration on material close to your planned feed. Rollers should pull evenly and the drum or disc should not create abnormal vibration. Inspect the knives as a set, their fasteners, the anvil, rotor housing, bearings, belts or clutch and the discharge mechanism. Incorrectly matched knife sets can disturb balance.

Test feed-roller hydraulics, sensors or control bars, stop and reverse, guards and service interlocks. On an engine-powered machine, assess starting and maintenance history; on a towable unit, also inspect frame, axle, tyres, brake and lighting where fitted. The offer should list spare knives, anvil, PTO shaft, remote and documents explicitly rather than relying on photographs.
