How do you choose a telescopic boom lift?

A straight telescopic boom provides long vertical and horizontal reach. It is not a telehandler: its purpose is to position a work platform carrying people and tools.

Essential data

  • Work envelope: maximum height and outreach, capacity zones, boom angle, jib and platform and turret rotation.
  • Access: machine position relative to the work area, obstacles, manoeuvring space and tailswing.
  • Chassis: wheels or tracks, axle drive, tyres, ground clearance, oscillating axles, terrain capability and ground requirements.
  • Power: combustion engine, batteries or hybrid system, including runtime and service availability.
  • Transport: stowed weight, length, width and height, tie-down points and carrier requirements.

Assessing a used boom lift

  • Inspect telescopic sections, wear pads, chains or ropes, pins, welds, cylinders and hoses as applicable to the model. Check the turntable, platform and controls.
  • During a test, assess smooth extension, elevation and rotation, emergency controls, travel and brakes. Keep the test within the manufacturer procedure.
  • Request the serial number, hours, manual and records of service, structural repairs and required inspections.
