How to match an overhead crane to a building and process

Start with building dimensions, the material flow, load spectrum and cycle frequency. A used crane is suitable only when its geometry and wheel loads match the supporting structure.

Data to compare

Top-running or underslung, single- or double-girder design, capacity, span and lifting height.
Duty class, hoisting and travel speeds, control method, power supply and environmental conditions.
Hoist, end carriages, wheels, rails or runway, buffers, conductors, pendant or radio control and hook equipment.

Buying a used crane

Verify dimensions and wheel centres, girder sections, component masses and the feasibility of transport and reinstallation.
Inspect deformation, corrosion, welds, wheels, gearboxes, brakes, ropes or chains, hook, limit switches, electrical equipment and controls.
Request data plates, manuals, diagrams and the operating, repair and inspection history, including the actual duty cycle.

Runway and structural responsibility

The condition of the existing runway and the building capacity require a separate assessment. Matching capacity and span alone does not establish that relocation is safe or compliant.
