Crop harvesting, not hole digging

This category covers equipment that lifts a crop from the soil. Confirm which crop and row arrangement the advertised machine supports. Changing its application may require different equipment: the word “digger” does not mean it can harvest every root crop.

Fit the machine to your harvesting system

Lifting: row count, intake width and compatibility with your row spacing and ridges. Soil separation: vibrating or web-based construction, depending on the model; bar spacing, component condition and available adjustments.

Discharge: leaving the crop on the field or transferring it onwards; discharge position and equipment needed for the next harvesting stage. Tractor: hitch, machine weight, drive and any hydraulic requirements. Check the manual for the exact version.

Checking a used digger

Ask for close-up views of the shares, webs or vibrating assembly, bearings and mountings. Inspect the frame for cracks and repairs and check that guards are present. Worn bars, belts and joints may cost more to replace than the shares alone. Ask about spare parts and whether performance with the intended crop can be assessed under the safe conditions specified by the manufacturer.

Establish where the machine's job ends. A digger that leaves the crop on the ground does not provide all the functions of a complete harvester with loading equipment. If you need to place planting material in the soil, look at planting machines instead.
