Choosing a plow for your tractor
Two plows with the same body count can differ in working width, weight and tractor requirements. Establish whether you need a conventional or reversible plow and a mounted or semi-mounted design. Compare exact versions rather than the series name alone.
Bodies and width: ask for the working width per body and how it is adjusted. Check whether the quoted total width refers to the current setting. Clearance: interbody spacing and underframe clearance matter for residue flow. Request pictures of the complete arrangement, including skimmers and coulters where fitted.
Tractor match: confirm linkage category, weight, lifting requirements and hydraulic connections. Engine horsepower alone does not establish compatibility. Protection and wheels: identify the overload protection system, depth or transport wheel equipment and the operation of the turnover mechanism where applicable.
Inspecting a used plow
Compare wear on shares, points, moldboards and landsides across all bodies. Inspect the frame, headstock, attachment points and repaired areas. Ask about play, leaks and parts availability for the particular plow body, not just the brand. Add the cost of a complete set of wearing parts when comparing purchase prices.
Is a larger plow always the better choice?
No. Soil, working depth, traction and lifting capability also affect the match. Check the requirements for the exact version in its documentation. If you want to loosen soil without conventional furrow inversion, also compare cultivators.
