Confirm that the machine can reach the stump

Stump diameter is not enough. Measure the narrowest access, assess slope and ground bearing, allow space for cutter-wheel sweep and plan how grindings will be handled. Separate self-propelled wheeled or tracked machines, towable units and attachments that require a specific carrier.

Specifications that change the job

  • Cutting envelope: height above grade, depth below grade, cutting width or sweep arc and the mechanism that moves the wheel. Use figures for the exact variant.
  • Wheel and teeth: cutter-wheel diameter and drive, tooth quantity and arrangement, pocket system and local parts availability. New teeth do not prove that their pockets and fasteners are sound.
  • Access and stability: transport and working width, operating weight, undercarriage, travel drive, braking and the permitted slope stated in the manual.
  • Controls: operator station, remote control or automatic functions only where fitted and demonstrated on the listed machine.
  • Transport: overall dimensions and weight, plus a clear statement on whether a trailer, ramps or hitch are included.

Inspecting a used stump grinder

Request a working demonstration with the wheel cutting material. Watch for vibration, bearing noise, loss of wheel speed and uneven sweep movement. Once the machine is stopped and secured, inspect the wheel for cracks or run-out, then check every tooth, pocket, fastener and guard. Examine drive belts or clutch, cutter bearings, hydraulic hoses and cylinders, sweep pivots and the undercarriage.

The serial number and model manual identify the correct teeth, weight and service procedures. For an engine-powered machine, request its maintenance history. For an attachment, verify the carrier mounting, hydraulic flow and pressure, return line and control requirements before treating it as compatible.
