How to choose an irrigation pump

Motor power alone does not show whether a pump will work. Establish the duty point: flow at a total head that includes elevation and losses through the system.

Data for pump selection

Demand: total outlet flow and pressure required at the hydraulically remote point. System: pipe lengths and diameters, fittings, filters, elevation and acceptable pressure loss.

Source: well, tank or surface water, water level, suction lift, variability and sand content. Pump and drive: curve, efficiency, speed, electric motor, engine or PTO, and protection devices.

Used-pump inspection

Read the pump and drive nameplates. Inspect the casing, accessible impeller, shaft, bearings, seal, coupling and signs of cavitation or overheating.
A useful test measures flow, pressure, power draw and stable operation. Confirm priming arrangements and dry-run protection.
