Match the spreader to the fertiliser, fields and tractor
The suitable configuration depends on the form and spreading properties of the fertiliser, the required working width and the manufacturer's setting data. Do not assume that the stated width applies to every granule or every machine setting.
What should a listing specify?
Mounting and capacity: mounted or trailed version, hopper capacity, permitted payload, unladen mass and transport dimensions. Spreading system: number and type of discs and vanes, agitator, metering shutters, feed point and the configuration range intended for the model.
Settings and checks: manual, setting charts or app, calibration procedure or spread-pattern test kit, and weighing or flow-control equipment where fitted. Field functions: border spreading, section control, variable-rate application, GPS and ISOBUS. Confirm which terminal, harnesses, activated functions and licences are included.
Compatibility: tractor lift capacity and axle loads, linkage or hitch, PTO, hydraulics, electrical supply and terminal requirements.
Inspecting a used spreader
Examine the hopper, frame and fertiliser-contact parts for corrosion, cracks and repairs. Check the agitator, shutters, actuators, discs, vanes, gearbox, PTO shaft, sensors and harnesses. On a weighing spreader, ask for evidence that the sensors and calibration functions operate. A demonstration can confirm shutter, control and display response, but application settings must later be selected for the actual fertiliser using the manufacturer's information.
