How to choose a feed silo?
Nominal capacity is not enough. Bulk density, delivery reserve, filling method and discharge equipment determine the useful configuration.
Information to verify
Feed: meal, pellets or another material, bulk density, flow behaviour and hygiene requirements. Capacity: m³ or tonnes, usable volume, daily consumption and intended storage period.
Structure: galvanised steel or GRP, hopper, outlet angle, roof, vents, access and level sensing. Conveying: pneumatic or mechanical filling and compatibility with augers, spirals or chain conveyors.
Installation: foundation, anchors, loads, service access and site requirements from the manufacturer.
Inspecting a used silo
Look for corrosion, cracks, leaking joints, damage to the hopper, legs and bracing, and assess ladders, platforms and discharge equipment.
Obtain structural and installation documentation. Dismantling, transport and re-erection should be assessed for the specific silo and site.
