How do you choose a verge mower?

This category primarily covers offset or tilting flail mowers, not hand-held, battery or lawn mowers. Match the machine geometry to the bank and ditch profile.

Specifications to compare

Width and offset: check working width, maximum reach beyond the tractor wheel and any uncut strip. Tilt range: compare work down into a ditch and up a bank; verify limits when fully offset.

Rotor and material: identify tools, permissible vegetation, rotor diameter, counter-knives, rear roller and skids. Tractor: confirm power, PTO, linkage, lift capacity, hydraulic connections, minimum mass or track and recommended ballast.

Transport: assess folded width and height, locks, centre of gravity and required road lighting. Protection: check break-back protection, guards, chains or curtains and the correct PTO shaft.

Inspecting a used machine

Check the frame, pivots, pins and bushes, cylinders, hoses, linkage points and signs of impact. Confirm that transport locks are complete.
Inspect rotor tools and holders, bearings, roller, skids, belts and gearbox. Test offset and tilt without jerking and the rotor without excessive vibration.
Do not select the machine by engine power alone. Tractor stability, lift capacity and centre of gravity matter just as much.
