Automation in construction machinery is becoming increasingly common, reshaping how projects are carried out on construction sites. With modern...

excavators are heavy construction machines, used to make excavations, cavities and sewage system, as well as to move soil, debris, stones and other materials. The excavators consist of a chassis, cabin, hydraulic system and work equipment, i.e. a spoon, a gripper, a hydraulic hammer, a cutter, etc. Excavators are necessary for the construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, mines, power plants, as well as earthworks in housing and industrial construction .

excavators differ in terms of size, power, performance, equipment, purpose and specialization. The division of excavators due to the weight divides them into micro, mini-, small, medium, large and gigantic. Microcopters, weighing up to 1 ton, are the smallest and are used to work in gardens, parks, cemeteries and other places where precision and maneuverability are required. The largest excavators, weighing over 1000 tonnes, are used when extracting natural raw materials and in opencast mines.

excavators also differ in the way of moving. Covered excavators are characterized by high traction, stability and strength, which is why they are used in difficult terrain, for example in mines. The wheeled excavators, due to the lower weight and less emphasis on the ground, are more handy and are used on urban and road construction.

When choosing an excavator for specific construction works, pay attention to a number of factors, such as:

  • Weight and dimensions - selected for field conditions and transport possibilities for construction.
  • Engine power - selected for the type of operation and for the type of area where the machine will work.
  • Load capacity and spoon capacity - should be properly selected for the type of construction works and the size of the materials that the excavator will move.
  • Working equipment - should be selected for the specifics of the work that a given excavator is performed (spoon, gripper, hydraulic hammer, etc.).
  • Comfort of work - in the case of longer work on the machine, the operator's comfort is important, so you should pay attention to the convenience of the cabin, its equipment and ergonomics.
  • Safety certificates and standards - excavators should meet the requirements set by standards and security certificates, such as: European Standards EN, ISO standards, CE certificate and Tüv, GS, or DEKRA.

It is also worth paying attention to the manufacturer's reputation, quality of workmanship, ease of use, availability of spare parts and service, operating costs and possible purchase financing options, such as leasing or credit.

The most popular manufacturers of building excavators are: Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Hitachi, JCB, Liebherr and Doosan. Excavators can be purchased from authorized dealers or companies involved in the rental of construction machinery.

In a nutshell, when choosing the right excavator, many factors should be taken into account, such as the type of work, area, working accessories, weight, engine power, bucket capacity, work comfort, certificates and safety standards, manufacturer's reputation and operating costs. It is worth consulting with a professional or specialist in renting or selling excavators to choose the optimal machine for specific construction works.
